The Main Bay
The town beach: a broad golden curve with fishing boats at one end and the famous point at the other. Best for convenience, people-watching and in-season swims in the calmer middle. It is the heart of the place rather than its prettiest sand.
Whiskey Point
The all-rounder north of Pottuvil: long open sand, the coast's softest wave, beach bars in season and space year-round. Best beach for beginners, families with older children, and quiet days that still have a pulse.
Peanut Farm and Elephant Rock
The wild pair south of the bay. Peanut Farm is jungle-backed sand with a beloved learner wave and almost no infrastructure. Elephant Rock is the sunset ritual: a small headland with a mellow wave below and the coast laid out from the top. Both are day trips, and better for it.
Pottuvil Point and the town beach
Pottuvil's long beach runs past the ancient Muhudu Maha Viharaya temple site, atmospheric and usually empty. Pottuvil Point at its end is a longer, less crowded right-hander that surfers rate in the right conditions. As a swimming beach it is wilder than the bay: caution applies.
Panama and Okanda
South of Peanut Farm the coast empties out entirely. Panama's beach is a vast, wild stretch beyond the dunes, effectively private on most days. Okanda, by the Kumana gate, pairs a surf point with its historic shrine. These are beaches for solitude and scenery; bring everything you need and respect the wildlife.

Which is the best beach in Arugam Bay for swimming?
In season, the calmer middle of the Main Bay and Whiskey Point are the friendliest. This is a surf coast, so always judge conditions on the day.
Which beach is best for beginner surfers?
Whiskey Point first, Peanut Farm second: both carry soft, forgiving waves used by the surf schools throughout the season.
Is Elephant Rock worth it?
Yes, as the coast's sunset ritual: a short climb, a mellow wave below and the whole southern coastline in view.
