Whiskey Point Hotels: Quiet Beach Stays and Beginner Waves

The beach at Whiskey Point is wide, long and rarely crowded outside the surf-school hours. The wave is a soft, forgiving right off the small point, ideal for first waves and improver sessions, and a couple of beach bars and surf shacks anchor the scene in season.

Because the wave is gentle, the water here is also among the friendlier swimming on this coast in season, though the usual east coast caution applies: conditions change, so judge the day.

Accommodation is spread out rather than clustered: cabana stays, small boutique properties and surf-house setups sitting in the palms behind the beach, plus simpler rooms along the road toward Pottuvil. Nights are dark and quiet, and most guests eat where they stay or make the short run into the bay.

That spread-out quiet is the defining trait. If you want to walk to a choice of restaurants, stay on the Main Strip. If you want the beach and the palms to carry the trip, this is the area.

Beginner surfers doing lessons every morning, couples who want quiet beach days with the bay's scene available on demand, families with older children learning to surf, and longer-stay travelers on a calmer rhythm. Nightlife-first travelers should stay on the strip.

Whiskey Point is about 7 kilometers north of the Main Strip, 15 to 20 minutes by tuk-tuk via Pottuvil. A scooter makes life easier out here: the bay, the lagoon trips and Pottuvil's ATMs and market are all a short ride away.

Pottuvil town and its lagoon sit between Whiskey Point and the bay: the mangrove boat trips at dawn or dusk are the classic non-surf activity here. The ancient coastal temple site of Muhudu Maha Viharaya lies by the beach in Pottuvil, and the bay's restaurants are a short ride south.
