Arugam Bay Travel Tips: Money, Transport and Local Know-How

The reliable ATMs are in Pottuvil, not on the strip, so draw cash when you pass through. Cards are accepted at the smarter stays and restaurants, but cash still runs the tuk-tuks, surf shacks and beach cafés. In peak season, agree tuk-tuk prices before riding.

The strip is walkable end to end. For everything else, tuk-tuks are the default, and a rented scooter transforms the trip: Whiskey Point, Elephant Rock, Peanut Farm and Panama all sit within an easy ride. Ride sober, in daylight where possible, and mind sand patches on the southern tracks.

This is a surf coast without lifeguard coverage: currents and shore-break vary by day and spot. Swim where locals and surf schools do, in season, and ask if unsure. Beginners should surf with a school rather than guessing at the lineups.

Wild elephants use the plains and roadsides south of the bay, especially toward dusk. Give them generous distance, never position between an elephant and its route, and follow local guidance about the Panama road at night. At the lagoon, crocodiles are residents: keep to the boats.

Pottuvil is a conservative town: cover up when off the beach, especially at the market, the mosque surroundings and temple sites like Muhudu Maha Viharaya. On the strip, standards are relaxed. Learn a few words of greeting; this coast repays it warmly.
