Things to Do in Arugam Bay Beyond the Waves

Watch or ride Main Point, take a first lesson at Whiskey Point, progress at Peanut Farm, or chase the quieter points at Pottuvil and Okanda. Even non-surfers should spend one sunrise watching the lineup at the point: it is the town's daily theater.

The mangrove boat trip is the bay's best non-surf hour: a poled or paddled ride through the lagoon at dawn or dusk, watching kingfishers, herons, crocodiles and, with luck, elephants at the water's edge. Book through your stay or directly at the lagoon.

Five kilometers south, a ten-minute scramble up the headland delivers the coast's definitive sunset view, with surfers on the small wave below. Combine it with a Peanut Farm beach afternoon.

The wild south ends at Kumana, one of Sri Lanka's premier birdwatching parks, with elephants resident and leopards present. Jeep safaris run as morning or afternoon trips from the bay and Panama through the Okanda gate, about 30 kilometers south.

Muhudu Maha Viharaya's ancient stupa and statues stand right in Pottuvil's dunes. Kudumbigala Monastery, a hermitage set among boulders about 20 kilometers south, rewards a short climb with a vast coastal panorama. Okanda's shrine, on the great Pada Yatra pilgrimage route to Kataragama, anchors the coast's living tradition.
