Arugam Bay Travel Guide: Surf, Beaches, Seasons and Planning

The geography is simple: Pottuvil is the real town with transport and services; the Main Strip 4 kilometers south is the visitor center of gravity; Main Point anchors the strip's southern end; Whiskey Point sits 7 kilometers north with the learner wave; and the wild south runs through Elephant Rock, Peanut Farm and Panama toward Kumana National Park.

May to September is the season: dry weather, working waves, everything open. June to August is peak, with the best surf consistency and the highest prices. From November to April the town winds far down: many places close or run skeleton service, the sea is less organized, and prices drop. Off-season Arugam Bay suits travelers who want emptiness and know what they are trading away.

Most travelers arrive by road. From Colombo plan 7 to 8 hours for the roughly 320 kilometers; many break the journey in the hill country. From Ella it is about 130 kilometers, typically 3.5 to 4.5 hours via Wellawaya and Monaragala. Buses run to Pottuvil, from where tuk-tuks cover the last 4 kilometers to the strip.

The non-surf program is genuinely strong: the Pottuvil Lagoon mangrove trip at dawn or dusk, sunset from Elephant Rock, the ancient shoreline temple of Muhudu Maha Viharaya, Kudumbigala Monastery's rock-top view, and a jeep safari into Kumana National Park for waterbirds, elephants and, with luck, leopards.
