Main Point Hotels: Staying Next to Arugam Bay's Famous Wave

Main Point is a right-hand point break over sand and rock that, on its day, delivers some of the longest rides in Sri Lanka. It works through the May to September season and is usually at its most consistent from June to August. It is an intermediate-and-up wave: beginners should learn at Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm and graduate here.

The lineup gets busy in peak season. The advantage of sleeping at this end is the early session, when the point is at its quietest and cleanest.

Accommodation clusters along the southern end of the strip and the lanes behind the point: surf camps and guesthouses aimed squarely at surfers, plus some cabana-style and mid-range stays. It is calmer at night than the central strip but you are still only a short walk from the restaurants.

In season, surf-focused stays here fill with returning guests. Book early for June to August, and expect simpler comfort levels than the boutique end of the market.

Intermediate and advanced surfers building the trip around the wave, longer-stay travelers who want surf routine over nightlife, and anyone who wants the strip within reach but not outside the window. Non-surfers and beginners usually get more from the central strip or Whiskey Point.

Main Point sits at the south end of the bay, roughly a kilometer from the center of the strip: walkable with a board. Tuk-tuks and scooters cover the southern surf run: Elephant Rock about 4 kilometers on, Peanut Farm about 7, and Panama about 11.

Elephant Rock is the classic sunset viewpoint and small-wave spot just south. Peanut Farm's jungle-backed beach follows, then the Panama plains and, further on, Kudumbigala Monastery and the Okanda gate of Kumana National Park.
