Where the budget stays are
The densest budget belt runs one to two lanes behind the Main Strip: same walkability, lower prices, more mosquito coils. Hostels with dorms cluster here too. Pottuvil town, 4 kilometers north, undercuts everything, in exchange for a tuk-tuk ride to the beach.
At Whiskey Point and Panama the budget options are simple rooms and huts, cheap but spread out, so factor transport into the daily math.
How prices move
June to August is peak: prices rise and the good cheap rooms go first, so book those weeks ahead. In the shoulder months of May, September and October the same rooms drop noticeably, and from November to April the strip half-hibernates and everything is negotiable, though many kitchens close.
